Rothenburgh ob der Tauber – August 29th 2017

We woke early and had to yank the kids out of bed almost. We couldn’t miss our breaky and had a date at a local bakery set for 9am.

We sat for our breakfast and enjoyed a more traditional German continental meal. They served many meats and cheeses, along with toast and a few pastries. We all were able to find something to eat and the best part was that I didn’t have to make or clean a thing!!—It’s the little things in life. haha

With full bellies we made it to town and to a 7th generation family owned and run bakery. We were going to learn how to make pretzels!! Pretzels were/are a staple for Germany and that region especially.

The Baker, was engaging and showed us how to roll the dough, shape it and then bake it. We worked in a kitchen with machines that his grandfather had used and found out that bakers keep very early morning schedules 😐

15 minutes in the oven and the pretzels were done. Our pretzel work was not bad, but definitely not nice enough to sell out front. We were gifted with a bag full of pretzels. Like 20 or more huge pretzels and to top it off the Baker made a huge one especially for us too. We would be feasting on pretzels for days!

Baking pretzels at 9 in the morning really wakes you up and so although we needed to hit the road to our next destination we explored the town for another hour or so. We climbed the tower in the city square. It was so neat. The stairways became more and more narrow the higher you got, the steps just a little steeper. Right at the top you go up a ladder to the viewing area. Gorgeous views and how cool was it that our fam just climbed a bell tower in an old German town that is many hundreds of years old!!

We had one more thing to do before leaving Rothenburg ob de Tauber. That was to climb it’s town walls. You see, the whole entire town is surrounded by a great wall. You can walk the entire circumference of the city around the wall too (about a 2 hour walk we are told).

Although our time was quick (less than 24 hours) in Rothenburg ob de Tauber, we had a fantastic time. The town was adorable, and it was such a fantastic experience for us and the kids. I’m convinced they loved it even if the words didn’t come out their mouths!
